About DiVino Wines

I had never intended to become a wine importer. Being an English-born, New Zealand-trained winemaker, it may seem strange that Italy became my focus. The impetus to become involved with Italian wine actually came one night in Wellington, New Zealand. We had stumbled upon a small Italian restaurant hidden away in the backstreets, and unlike many Italian restaurants all over the world, the menu looked genuine and the people inside were Italian, from the south of Italy. The food was perfect, real, and just what we were looking for. But it was the wine that really did it. To taste these unusual, exhilarating flavours after months and months of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir made in the modern, fruity, clean style was a shock to the system. A good shock however. It was time to return.

The great thing about Italy is the sheer range of wine styles. Coming straight from the new world as I did, this was a great cause of excitement for what I feared was becoming a jaded palate. There are more interesting grape varieties here than anywhere else I have been to, and there are more and more producers who are using these to fashion unique wines which encapsulate the very essence of their regions.

The next few years were spent working all over Italy, learning about as many different regions and wines as possible. A brief trip back to England made me realise however that these fantastic wines just weren’t available here, And so the idea for DiVino was born. We import small volumes directly from the producers ourselves. That way we can ensure that all the wines meet our standards of quality and character. We hope that you will be able to explore these wines and start to see why we like Italian wines so much.
