The Carminucci Family, and their sheep. |
|
They have vineyards in several of the top locations in Le Marche, including the prestigious area Rosso Piceno Superiore and a fantastic vineyard which looks out onto the adriatic sea from which they make the top class Litora from super-ripe Verdicchio grapes.
Le Marche is an interesting region from the point of viticulture because it is mountainous, and is right on the sea. This means that grapes can be grown on quite steep slopes (always a good thing as it increases the exposure to the sun), they can benefit from a drop in temperature at night (because of the altitude) which increases the aromatic quality of the grapes. And some, such as the Litora vineyard mentioned before, look right out onto the sea, the extra reflected sunlight that the grapes receive can really be seen in the quality of the wine.
The family has been growing grapes from nearly a century, and is now overseen by Giovanni, the fourth generation. He grows the grapes, makes the wine (and the Olive Oil) and does everything else too! The vineyards are cultivated organically, the sheep in the picture above are part of the weed control and fertilization team!
As for the wines, they make a small range from the superbly drinkable everyday Grotte Sul Mare range to the highly rated Rosso Piceno Superiore and the Falerio which is the perfect wine to have with grilled fish. |
